What is so new about the Taurus TX22 Gen 2?
A Review and Commentary on the new Taurus TX22 TORO/Gen2.
After being first introduced five years ago, Taurus' TX22 platform .22LR pistol has a well earned reputation as a solid plinking and training platform pistol. The ergonomics are good, performance is above average, and the price point makes it a great value. Taurus addressed some concerns with barrel rifling and slide durability, and the multiple variants made the TX22 platform appeal across different user groups (i.e., TX22 Standard, TX22 Competition, and TX22 Compact).
With the TX22 Generation 2, Taurus has made some step change improvements on an already very good plinker. Key changes from Gen1 to Gen2 are the barrel, the recoil system, and the trigger system.
Gen2 features a very heavy duty bull barrel - see picture below of Gen1 vs. Gen2. The bull barrel adds stiffness and rigidity, reducing vibration. The added mass also helps in heat management, improving consistency shot to shot. The new design also allows direct connection of 1/2x28 thread on accessories (e.g., compensators, suppressors) without use of the adapter required on the Gen1 barrels. While we at Lakeline love the accuracy and performance of our aftermarket TX22 Gen1 match grade barrel with 1:14 RH twist rifling (tighter than factory 1:16), the Gen2 is a very stable platform that we think you will like.

The Gen2 recoil system also got an upgrade from a single captive spring to a dual captive spring system. The recoil also changes from a flat wire spring to a standard music wire spring. We are working on an aftermarket Gen2 recoil with a stainless steel guide rod.

In Gen2, Taurus introduces their Taurus Performance Trigger System (PTS). While I have always personally liked the TX22 trigger pull feel, we agree the PTS is an improvement. It is a very smooth feel and reset.
The final significant change is in the slide. With Gen2, Taurus is offering a TORO option - Optics Ready slide cut - and changed the iron sights over to the Glock standard. The Glock dovetails are much more forgiving to install and it opens up a large aftermarket world for sights.
